Hazardous substances are subject to limit values. These are criteria which determine how much of a particular substance is allowed to be in the air in the workplace. If the levels are below the limit in question, this basically means it is safe to work.
Working Conditions Regulations Annex XIII
The limit values for a number of hazardous substances are laid down in legislation, namely in 2 annexes to the Working Conditions Regulations. Annex XIII A contains limit values for non-carcinogens and Annex XIII B for carcinogens.

In the case of other hazardous substances, employers are required to set their own safe values. You should check with a supervisor or health and safety expert to make sure that the the limit value and exposure are below the applicable limit.
National database
A national database of limit values is also available. If this database contains a public (legal) limit value, you are always required to use it. If the database indicates that the limit value is just a 'private' one, it will not always be clear which one to choose. In that situation you should consult the occupational health and safety expert.
