Explanation of H and P statements
H statement
An H statement is a 'Hazard' or 'danger'. It means the substance in question may be dangerous. Whether a substance is truly dangerous also depends on how long you work with it and how much of it you ingest. We refer to this as the degree of exposure.
P statement
A P statement stands for 'Precautionary statement' which indicates how risks can be prevented and mitigated. 'Keep cool' is an example of a precautionary statement. 'See a doctor immediately' is another one. P statements are often used in combination, which is why the individual P statements often appear to be incomplete.
