Electromagnetic fields and optical radiation – such as radiofrequency or microwave fields, and laser, ultraviolet and infrared radiation – are forms of non-ionising radiation.
Avoid exposure to radiation
Although non-ionising radiation is generally less harmful to health than ionising radiation, it can still pose risks to health. Employers must therefore design workplaces in such a way that these risks are avoided.
Electromagnetic fields
Electromagnetic fields arise wherever electric currents flow or transmission signals are present. In household appliances that use relatively small electric motors, transformers or transmitters – such as mixers and computers – the strength of these electromagnetic fields is too low to cause known health effects. Near certain sources, however, electromagnetic fields can cause health effects. Employees who work with such sources must therefore comply with the relevant requirements. If your company works with electromagnetic fields, see arboportaal.nl for more information about electromagnetic fields (Dutch).
Optical radiation
Optical radiation is not always harmful. However, prolonged exposure to ultraviolet radiation, infrared radiation and laser light can damage the eyes and skin. Lasers can also cause serious harm after only short exposure. If your company works with optical radiation, see arboportaal.nl for more information about optical radiation (Dutch).
