If employers or employees violate labour regulations, the Netherlands Labour Authority takes enforcement action. The Labour Authority does this using a range of measures, such as warnings, fines and suspensions of operations.

Purpose of penalties

Penalties are intended to put an end to a violation as quickly as possible. As they can also have significant financial consequences, they often serve as a deterrent.

Procedure for imposing penalties

The Netherlands Labour Authority always confirms in writing which penalties are being imposed, what measures must be taken and the deadline for rectifying the violation(s). The Netherlands Labour Authority carries out spot checks to verify whether the necessary measures have been taken. If this has not been done, a more severe penalty is imposed.
