Working alone

The Working Conditions Act has no special requirements regarding working alone. Employers are responsible for providing a safe and healthy workplace for workers on their own.

The employer records the situations where workers work alone in the Risk Inventory and Evaluation (RI&E) (Dutch).

Is everyone allowed to work alone?

There are organisations that require workers to seek their manager's permission for working alone. Working alone is definitely not allowed if a worker has a particular illness or is on medication. Young people aged under 18 may never work alone.

What can an employer do for workers who work alone?

Employers must ensure that workers working alone can protect themselves from unwanted visitors, can quickly raise the alarm and carry a phone or walkie-talkie, for example. It is also advisable to make a manual of what to do in an emergency.
