Kidfluencers

Kidfluencers are children aged up to 12 who regularly post content on social media. It is not always clear whether it concerns work or a hobby. Some kidfluencers have many followers and generate high earnings based on their content.

Applying for exemption

The law states that, in the Netherlands, children aged up to 12 are not allowed to work. This is a general ban: the ban on child labour (Dutch). An exemption from this ban is possible if the work involves cultural/artistic work. This applies to work for online audiovisual productions of a clear commercial nature, such as promoting products or participating in scripted videos.

In addition to kidfluencers, we also draw attention to other productions where children frequently appear on screen such as momfluencers, dadfluencers and family vloggers.

Reporting

Do you suspect that a kidfluencer is working? Please report it to the Netherlands Labour Authority on 0800 51 51 or use the reporting form. Use 'working hours' as the subject of the report. Next, you can submit a report about 'work by children and young people'.

To assess the report as best as possible, we kindly ask you to provide us with the following information:

  • the kidfluencer's name
  • platform (YouTube, Instagram, TikTok, etcetera)
  • a description of the situation
  • link to kidfluencer's post
